Cast your eyes to the furthest point you can see ahead to ensure you have a comfortable gap in which to make your pass before the next corner, obstacle or approaching traffic. The common mistake people make is to misjudge the amount of time they have to spend on the wrong side of the road. It’s better to imagine the single vehicle you want to overtake as a row of parked cars because the effect is the same.

With a target travelling at 50 mph and you passing at 55, it will take 50 metres to get past it. That’s ten parked cars. At 65 you can clear the same vehicle in a little over three car lengths – the smaller the difference in speeds, the longer the move takes.

General Observations

Trust nothing that you can’t see is clear: blind bends, brows over hills and undulations that can hide a car.

Beware any junctions or hidden entrances along your proposed trajectory, because cars can and will emerge from them without expecting to see you on their side of the road. These encounters make number five on the list of greatest hits.

Check for legal restrictions that forbid overtaking such as solid or double lines and other signs which, though not legally binding, might prove useful in the near future: railway crossings, traffic lights, single-lane tunnels, minefields and junctions(!).
